Hiring & Engaging Diverse Student Talent: Employer Toolkit

These modules were developed by Career Exploration & Education in consultation with University of Toronto Scarborough Career Centre, University of Toronto Mississauga Career Centre, York University, Lakehead University, Wilfrid Laurier University, McMaster University, OCAD University, Queen’s University, and Toronto Metropolitan University. 
 
This employer toolkit focuses on the hiring, onboarding, and retention and engagement of students and recent graduates through the lens of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility within the Western world of work. The intended audience for this toolkit is employers or professionals in experiential and work-integrated learning (co-op, work study), or those who hire students and recent graduates into their organizations. It can be effectively utilized by these individual organizations or integrated into the programs, services, and resources of post-secondary institutions and career centres.

The toolkit also includes downloadable samples and templates, such as examples of how to translate academic accommodations to the workplace, sample screening documents, and a downloadable certificate of completion. Each module also encourages participants to download and complete an action plan for integrating their learning into their hiring, onboarding, or retention and engagement practices. 

Each module is a stand-alone resource that may be supportive for individuals with different roles within an organization. Learners do not need to complete the first two modules in order to complete module three, for example, but are encouraged to engage with the entire toolkit to consider the full experience of a diverse candidate, from application through to employment.
